However, "Better Man" is one of the few self-explanatory tracks in Pearl Jam's catalog, at least to those who know the story of his childhood.

The reviewer's post appears to be ignorant in several places, and if not ignorant, at least insensative. For example:

"The protagonist of this song is not a victim, just a kvetcher, and a cowardly one at that. This isn't Saudi Arabia: if your man gained some weight since you married him, or he's too busy trying to provide for the family to nurture you all-day long, or he won't go down on you in bed, just leave him!"

In all likelyhood, the song is about Eddie's mother, who married a man who turned out to be abusive. Vedder believes that the only reason she stayed with him was because she needed help supporting the family. This may or may not be a valid reason to stay in a bad relationship, but at the very least, she wasn't a "kvetcher."

"Eddie Vedder thinks he's the "Better Man." He feels the pain of menopausal women undergoing midlife crises..."

I'd be willing to go out on a limb and say the song has nothing to do with any self-worshipping "victim fetish" that Eddie Vedder has. Sometimes a songwriter will write about someone close to his/herself. Just because he wrote the song doesn't mean he believes he's the "Better Man."

But the only complaint of the protagonist in "Better Man" is that she can't find a better man.

On surface level, this seems to be true. But if this guy had taken 5 minutes to research the song he hates so much (and by the way, probably dedicated a good 30-45 minutes of his life writing about), he would've seen that there's probably something a lot deeper behind this song than "girl dates jock because she's lonely." Just because something isn't spelled out in a song, it doesn't mean that it's not a part of the whole story.

Actually, come to think of it, this guy has a future with Rolling Stone magazine.
